Athens is a university city located in the northeastern part of the state, 70 miles from Atlanta. It forms with the county of Clarke to which it is linked a town of 115 400 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city in Georgia. The University of Georgia, which occupies a large part of the city, is directly responsible for its growth. Very animated by its large student population, the city also owes its dynamism to football (with one of the best university teams in the United States, the Georgia Bulldogs) and music.
