Huntsville is one of the oldest towns in Texas, founded in 1836 when Texas was just gaining independence. Settlers from the East soon established a small military post there, which soon oversaw a large prison. Huntsville became the home of Sam Houston, who served as President of the Republic of Texas, Governor of the State of Texas, Governor of Tennessee, U.S. Senator and Congressman from Tennessee. Today there is a local population of approximately 46,000 people. Huntsville offers several interesting museums that tell the story of the state, including the tomb of Sam Houston.
