The site is 70 metres above the level of Lake Nasser and therefore has not been relocated. It is located 240 kilometres from Aswan, 50 kilometres from Sudan, and 60 kilometres north-east of Abu Simbel, on the eastern shore of Lake Nasser. It was once an important religious, economic and political centre. Qasr Ibrim has also had a long history of occupation, including Roman occupation. The site was excavated for the first time by David Randall-MacIver and C. Leonard Woolley for the Eckley B. Coxe expedition for the University of Pennsylvania in 1911. The remains of the fortified town on a rocky hill have been preserved.
