Border town and port without real charm, Wadi Halfa has not always been like this. In fact, it could be said that it was even elsewhere, since its current location on the edge of Lake Nasser (so-called "Nubian Lake", don't forget!) was precisely due to the lake's impoundment in the 1960 s. Previously, the city was renowned for its palm groves and its atmosphere. It served as a relay to the British during the mahdiste period and during World War II. Some of the inhabitants of the old Halfa were relocated to a New Halfa (Halfa Jedida), 800 km from there, near Kassala! As for the nomads who pâturaient in the region, they lost their land, without any compensation because they were not owned by the state. Outside the ferry that liaises with the north end of the lake, the Chinese had the idea of developing the fishing industry. We console the way you can.Coming from or going to Egypt, you will necessarily get there. By ferry certainly, but perhaps also one day by road. A Wadi Halfa-Aswan link is expected for the next few years. It is true that for two countries with a land border of more than 1 200 km, they can only cross it by boat, rather than by boat.
