Like the Temple of Isis at Philae, the two monumental temples of Abu Simbel were doomed to collapse when the Aswan Dam was built. But unlike the first one, they were dug into a rock. So they had to be cut out to artificially reconstruct the mountain at a higher point. Work began in 1963 and was not completed until eight years later. 12,000 tonnes of blocks weighing between 5 and 20 tonnes, each carefully cut, numbered, treated with synthetic resins, moved and reassembled 65 m higher. Located nearly 300 km from Aswan, Abu Simbel consists of a tiny village and an airport.
