About twenty kilometres from Kirillov, the village of Ferapontov also houses a superb monastery, surprising for its homogeneity and state of conservation. It was founded by Saint Ferapontov in 1398 and most of the buildings date from the 15th to 17th centuries. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, in particular, contains remarkably beautiful and remarkably well preserved murals, painted in 1502 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
