Travel Guide Ferapontov (Ферапонтов)

Ferapontovo, about 20 kilometres from Kirillov, is home to a superb monastery. Founded by Saint Ferapontov in 1398, it was built from the 15th to the 17th century. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, in particular, contains frescoes of extraordinary beauty, painted in 1502. They cover an area of 600 square metres and are of exceptional historical interest as they are the work of Dionysius, one of the masters of the Moscow school. Take the time to admire the wealth of these paintings, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ferapontovo can be reached by road from Kirillov, and both sites are worth a trip from Vologda.
