This small town 60 km north of Leipzig enjoys a very picturesque setting on the Elbe River with its Renaissance castle overlooking the river and the charming old town at its feet. Well developed, in the heart of this authentic river landscape, Torgau is undoubtedly the most beautiful little stopover in northern Saxony. It was here that on April 25, 1945, the American and Soviet armies joined forces on the Elbe bridge. This is also where Catherine de Bore, Luther's wife, lived. Torgau was the first city to take the armed side of the Reformer who very often frequented this prosperous and powerful Saxon city. The castle museum retraces the different highlights of the city's history.
