The first written mention of Weiden dates back to 1241. The town was destroyed by fire in 1536, leaving only seven houses fit for habitation. Barely rebuilt, it fell victim to fire again in 1540. In 1634, the Swedes invaded the southern German territories, and Weiden bore the brunt of the theft and destruction. Exsanguinated, the town took over 200 years to return to relative prosperity, mainly due to the opening of a rail link in 1863. In 1995, the opening of the Fachhochschule Amberg-Weiden, specializing in business management, testified to the town's new-found attractiveness.
