Although Schwandorf is nowadays a small, unassuming town with no particular tourist appeal, its importance was greater in the Middle Ages, when it became the seat of a ducal administrative center in 1234, and enjoyed the enviable title of market town and the prerogatives inherent in the title. Throughout its history, the town suffered repeated destruction and had to rebuild each time: during the Hussite Wars (1419-1436), the Bavarian-Landshut War of Succession (1503-1505), the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the Napoleonic invasions and in April 1945.
