THE HOUSE OF HEADS
House built by architect Albert Schmidt, evoking the golden age of merchants and the affluence of the merchant bourgeoisie
This superb building is one of Colmar's most famous historic monuments. Built in 1609 by the architect Albert Schmidt for the merchant Anton Burger, it is in the German Renaissance style. The most surprising thing about the façade is the 111 heads and masks that adorn it, hence the name. The Maison des Têtes evokes the golden age of commerce and the affluence of Colmar's merchant bourgeoisie. In 1902, the gable decorated with scrolls and fins was topped by a statue of Tonnelier, the work of Auguste Bartholdi
