Surrounded by hills in a rugged landscape, the town is mentioned in documents dating from 1470. Agriculture, crafts and trade developed here, but it was in the post-war period that Căușeni grew by enlarging an industrial area and becoming a town in 1965. The main attraction of Căușeni is its Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which dates from the 17th-18th centuries and is considered one of the oldest in Moldova. It attracts many visitors every year but is currently being restored. Its frescoes painted by Stanciu, Radu and Voicu in 1763 are beautiful but fragile.
