HELLS CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

Natural site to discover

Tracing the border between Idaho and Oregon, Snake River flows north through a stunning landscape. Depuis Hells Canyon Dam until its confluence with Clearwater River, the river has carved a gorge deeper than that of Grand Canyon, reaching 2,600 feet of altitude sometimes.

Lined with fine sand beaches, its course sometimes are quiet, sometimes punctuated with impressive rapids. On both sides slopes that climb down from the streams, covered with meadows and forests. The first explorers were at this point terrified by these extreme reliefs that they called the "canyon of hell" and "mountain of the seven devils"! Today, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area protects this excepionnelle nature. Difficult access, this site remains unknown, unfortunately.
