This charming small town is situated in the heart of a river valley, between the Blue Mountains and the Wallowa Mountains. It was founded in 1874, two years after the discovery of gold in the region. It then becomes the geographic centre of the gold, copper and silver mines in the region. In 1900, the population reached 6 700 inhabitants: more than the people of Spokane or Boise at that time. Then there is a period of prosperity, during which beautiful Victorian buildings are built, among other things. More than of these buildings have been preserved and classified as historic monuments. In addition to its ideal location for skiing, hiking, rafting or animal watching, the city has a real historical interest.
