Situated 2 km south of John Day, Canyon City was founded in 1862 by some 10 000 miners, attracted by gold. Canyon City was then described as the Oregon Deadwood, referring to the City of South Dakota, emblematic of the gold rush and its biases. On the first weekend of June, 62 Day Celebration commemorates the discovery of this place in 1862.
