Several companies offer a short cruise from the port of Hout Bay to observe a seal colony.

There's a seal colony on Duiker Island. A small cruise from the port of Hout Bay to this rock, along the coast and even as far as Cape Town in the summer. Several companies operate in the harbour, but the smallest boats are those of Drumbeat Charters. No need to make reservations, boats leave all the time. On the wharf, the seals are ready to put on a real show to get a fish. Seals are still wild animals and if they appear to be big, very tender beasts, they can bite you!

La ballade est intéressante mais on ne reste qu'environ dix minutes sur le site où nagent les phoques, moitié pour les passagers à babord, moitié pour les "tribords". Très vifs dans l'eau, ils sont particulièrement difficiles à photographier. On pourra s'en passer si on va à Cap Cross en Namibie, où les phoques sont des milliers à se prélasser à quelques mètres de la passerelle des visiteurs. Quant au phoque qui "pose" sur le quai de Hot Bay, il est carrément obèse! Astuce: se garer avant le port, sur le parking de la plage, c'est à cinq minutes à pied et c'est gratuit.

Nous avons pris la companie seal snorkeling.
Zodiac de 15 places
encadrement par 2 plongeurs et 1 capitaine

Les otaries à fourrure sont à environ 15 min en bateau du port.
Nous avions des combinaisons épaisses (la mère est froide 12°C)
Nous avons plongés environ 1h. Suffisant.
Les otaries vous approcheront et sont super vivaces
ça va vite très vite
la mer à cet endroit est assez formée... bref ça brasse

Mon épouse ne voulait pas faire du snorkeling - elle a pu nous accompagner et rester sur le bateau pour profiter du spectacle - avec une petite réduction. Elle a tout de même revêtue une combinaison
Cependant, les plongeurs étaient attentionnés et ont gentiment insistés et invités à les rejoindre dans l'eau.

Je recommande

Pour les photos - obturation au 1/400 sinon flous de bougé - profondeur inférieure à 3 m
