Remarkable fortifications in the city of Corfu Chora.
Ideal for its 360-degree view over the city, this "old fort" was considered ideal for building a fortified town: overlooking the sea, it could be used as a coastal checkpoint. On the north side of the acropolis, you'll find a small artificial harbour. The first fortifications were built by the Byzantines in the early 8th century. In the 16th century, threatened by the Ottomans, the Corfiotes erected additional towers, the western gate, a second pit and a third defensive line around the two peaks.
