Mljet National Park with natural channel around Veliko Jezero and salt lakes. Possibility of swimming, walking and hiking.

One of the entrances to the park is located at Goveđari but it is possible to pick up your ticket in a wooden hut in the village of Pristanište near the large salt lake.

In the southern part, the sea enters the land through a natural channel, a sort of small canyon around the Veliko Jezero (Great Lake), which is followed by other narrower canyons around the Mali Jezero (Small Lake). These salt lakes, rich in aquatic fauna (various shellfish) and plankton, are the subject of much scientific research. Striped mongooses (Mungos mungo) have become predators for poisonous snakes, which have disappeared, while the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus albiventer), a protected mammal, still lives in the park, a paradise for birdwatchers as well.

You can organise long walks and hikes, swimming and canoeing. For the early risers or the lucky ones who don't have a ferry to catch (!), a swim when the tourists have not yet left or have already left is an unforgettable pleasure. In the middle of the lake, we feel alone in the world, all around us, the virgin hills, the lush vegetation, a few farms in the distance. The well-designed dirt roads (reserved for bicycles and pedestrians) invite you to walk for a few hours on this site, which has remained wild.

In the southern part of the Great Lake, the islet of Sainte-Marie is home to a Benedictine monastery and a 12th century church, a Mediterranean garden, ruins of old buildings, at the foot of which one can bathe, and a restaurant.
