ABBATIALE D'ALMENECHES
Abbey church of the Benedictine abbey of Almenêches 12 km from Argentan and 2.5 km from Château de Médavy
The present-day church was part of the Benedictine women's abbey built at the end of the 6th century. It housed nuns until the 18th century. Governed in the 8th century by Saint Opportune, sister of the Bishop of Sées, it was destroyed in the 12th century, then rebuilt and enlarged by Abbess Louise in the 16th century. The high nave with ribbed vaulting dates from this period. The present choir, altar, altarpiece and two superb painted side chapels with panelled ceilings were built in the 17th century. Nothing remains of the abbey.
