What a strange city that Khartoum! As the capital of the largest African country in which it is sociologically a small model, the Sudanese metropolis is characterized mainly by three things. Firstly, it is made from three very distinct cities: Omdurman, Khartoum North and Khartoum itself. Being outside Khartoum and talking about Khartoum is reminiscent of the metropolis. Being in the metropolis and talking about Khartoum is reminiscent of what is called in this guide Khartoum-Centre, the reduced city built by the English to the south of the confluence. This is the second point. Khartoum, the city of the Nile, is probably the one that is most easily connected from space or on a silent map (including rivers…). It lies in the confluence of Nils Blue and White, the largest tributaries of the longest river in the world. The last characteristic is finally its environment. If the Nile were not there, Khartoum would be in the heart of a burning and unlivable desert. The Nilotic metropolis is thus considered the warmest capital in the world in terms of temperature! All this has to dream many amateur adventurers or African enthusiasts about the mysteries of this city… Yet Khartoum is the country's most modern city and has a good chance of strengthening this trend in the coming years. It is a reflection of a reconcilié, voluntary and forward-looking Sudan and development. In fact, if peace is confirmed in the country, Khartoum may well become one of the great metropolises in Africa of the twenty-first century.
