A major communication hub between Hrodna, Vilnius and Minsk, Lida is the second largest city in the region after Hrodna. The date of its foundation is uncertain. Lida was founded by Prince Ghédimin in 1326 when the famous fortress was built. It is now known for its brewery (Lidskoe Pivo), founded in 1873. The many wars that have gone on here have left a deep mark. It is a Soviet city which, apart from its castle, has not kept much of its past. Savieckaja Street is the city centre. At No. 2 is the Catholic church of the Exaltation of the Cross (th century). At No. 20 you can find the Orthodox Church Saint-Michel (early th century) with its great dome, which, in Soviet times, hosted the town planetarium.
