Beautiful province of province, Slonim rises on the edge of the river Chtchara. First mentioned in the Chronicles in 1252 under the name Uslonim and then De, its name means "fortified village". From the end of the th century, Slonim is part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Located at the intersection of the roads Vilna-Brest, Pinsk-Hrodna, and Warsaw-Minsk-Smolensk, Slonim played a fundamental role in the Grand Duchy's economy. In the th century, the city was prosperous. Following the union of Brest (1596), there are a multitude of Catholic monasteries which form a kind of protective belt around the castle of lords of the city. In the th century, Michel-Casimir Oginski left a deep imprint. As a patron and reformer, Slonim is enriched by many factories, a printing machine and a theatre. At the time, Slonim was known as «Athens de la Polésie». To facilitate the shops, Oginski also built a canal, the famous Oginski Canal, which links the Ščara to the river Iasselda, so the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, which passes through Slonim today. A town of 50 000 inhabitants, green, peaceful, it has preserved the charm of the past.
