Located 120 km from Fès, Taza is a little-known tourist town, but well worth a visit. Linking present-day Algeria to the Atlantic coast, used by the Romans and then the Arabs, Taza was a strategic position. That's why, in the 10th century, the Meknassas built a fortified town on high ground to control this passageway, which provided access to Fez. The Alaouites, who came from Tafilalet, then took control of the town before ruling Morocco. Taza gives the appearance of a town far removed from the cultural center of Morocco, but it retains the status of a provincial capital. Stop off for a stroll and enjoy the souks, the Place d'Armes and the Andalusian Mosque.
