A small, quiet town (about 100,000 inhabitants), 158 km north of Moramanga on the RN 44, in the heart of a region nicknamed the "rice granary" of Tana. In the morning, there is always a lot of activity near the market, in the heart of the rice fields as far as the eye can see. The hills surrounding the city are suffering from erosion due to intensive deforestation; the environmental consequences are dire, as evidenced by the level of the lake, which has retreated some 20 kilometers since the city was founded. Tradition reports that Ambatondrazaka was founded by Randriambololona and his three children at the end of the 18th century.
