Anjozorobe is located within the Anjozorobe-Angavo forest corridor, 90 km northeast of Antananarivo via a tarmac road and then a bumpy track (approx. 2-hour drive). The new area protects 52,000 hectares of forest, including 28,000 ha of tropical rainforest: canopy, windfalls, bamboo, lichens, arborescent pandanus... Local endemic species include the Voalavo antsahabensis (rodent), the Atelornis crossleyi and the Phelsuma pronki (gecko). There are also nine species of lemur, including the Indri indri and the diademed sifaka, 74 species of reptile and amphibian, and at least 550 plant species. Anjozorobe is said to mean "where there are many reeds". Historically, the reeds served as a refuge for the Menalamba independence troops (led by Rabezavana) during the French invasions between 1895 and 1898, making it an important site for Malagasy nationalism. Temperatures range from 15°C in August to 25°C from December to March (during the day), guaranteeing a cool stay.Anjozorobe is a great excursion, easy to make for a weekend away from the capital, or to discover a lesser-known facet of Imerina. Staying at the Akibalodge is an excellent option, combining the pleasant with the useful, as this accommodation supports local communities and territories. Last but not least, Anjozorobe is over 3.5 hours' drive from Mantasoa.
