GROTTES AUTOUR D'ITAMPOLO
Go there and contact
There are many beautiful caves to discover in the Itampolo area. These caves are thought to be the result of the collapse of limestone over the millennia and the subsequent formation of an underground water network. They are not intended for tourism. Positive aspects: you'll often be on your own (but we recommend asking the locals to take you there!) and admission is free. Negatives: their direct environment (forests, sometimes with baobabs) is not well preserved and they are sometimes difficult to locate.
Androimpano cave, 3 km from Itampolo. Best visited in the evening, as lemurs often spend the night here! According to a British scientist who recently abseiled into the cave, it is 180 metres deep and contains many bones of extinct animals. A beautiful place to enjoy the sunset.
The Andramanoatse cave, some ten kilometers from Itampolo. The cave, 66 meters deep, is a 3-hour walk from where you leave your car. Here you can see blind fish and lemurs.
The Vintany cave, 4 kilometers from Androka. This cave is best known for its legends.
Don't hesitate to ask your hosts in Itampolo (Villa Milahehe or Hôtel Sud Sud) for information, so that they can show you the way or accompany you. We look forward to seeing you.
