FRESHWATER CAVE
This cave belongs to the Tsinjoriake protected area (which begins 15 km from Tuléar). Although separated from the sea by only 10 m of rock, the water flowing through the cave is fresh. It is said to come from the Seven Sacred Lakes, at the end of a 70 km underground journey. Freshwater fish have found refuge in these superb translucent waters. But beware: bathing is fady, so remember to respect this site, which is still sacred to the locals.
Several legends are linked to this place, one of which says: "One day, there was a great fisherman. And every time he came back from the sea, a tromba would come to him at night and say: "You agree with me, I'll do something..." And every time the fisherman refused. But the tromba came back every night to repeat his request. This went on for a long time. One day, the great fisherman said: "All right! So the tromba said to him, "Go to the cave with all the people of the village, celebrate the tromba, bring rum, sing, offer sacrifices, dance... I'll do something." The fisherman did everything the tromba had asked. And as the festive music echoed through the night, suddenly an all-white cow with a black head and a little white calf with a black head appeared at the back of the cave. These two magical animals left with the great fisherman, who became master of the tromba and won love, fortune, health and happiness." Since then, villagers have come here to make wishes and throw food and coins to the fish..
