Located 20 km from San Juan del Rio, Tequisquiapan is a colorful village, once known for its thermal waters. The village, a resort for wealthy families from Mexico City and Querétaro, is mainly animated on weekends and during the holidays. Today it is known for the fería nacional del Queso y el Vino, which takes place every year between the last week of May and the first week of June. An opal mine, La Carbonera, is just a few kilometres away, as are several vineyards and cheese-making farms, which are open to the public. If you stop by, ask about hot air ballooning.
