population: 63,000. The whole life of this small town revolves around its magnificent temple dedicated to Nataraja, Shiva as cosmic dancer. The temple door features the 108 positions of Bharatanatyam, the classical dance of South India. It was built between the 10th and 16th centuries. Chidambaram is also famous for the temple-cart festivals held in December and January, as well as in June and July. This pilgrimage town is not well worth a visit, and decent hotels offer poor value for money, but a visit to the Nataraja Temple, with its mystical and bewitching atmosphere, is a must.
