population: 23,190. Now known as Tharangambadi, this former Danish trading post on the Coromandel coast looks like the end of the world. It lies 80 kilometers south of Chidambaram, near the Cauvery river delta. The Danes left their mark on the history of the town, which was under their rule from 1620 to 1845. At the foot of the fort, the sound of the waves is muted. A partially ruined temple on the shore and churches built by missionaries in the 18th century add to the old-fashioned charm of the place. It was here, in 1715, that the first copy of the Tamil New Testament was printed.
