Karaikal is a major port on India's east coast. It is under the jurisdiction of theUnion Territory of Pondicherry. The town, with a population of 74,500, became a French trading post in 1674 and remained so until 1954, despite temporary British and Dutch takeovers. The city's population is made up of Hindus, Christians and Muslims. The city's largest church is Our Lady of Angels, and there are several important Hindu temples, notably the Karaikal Ammaiyar temple. The city is well connected by rail, but of limited interest to the traveler.
