Auroville, 12 km from Pondicherry, means "town of dawn". This unique community in India was founded on February 28, 1968 by La Mère, Sri Aurobindo's spiritual collaborator. Previously, she had helped create the Sri Aurobindo ashram (in Pondicherry) and founded the Sri Aurobindo International Centre for Education. Auroville is the "universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in progressive peace and harmony beyond all creeds, political orientations and nationalities. The aim of Auroville is to achieve human unity", said La Mère in 1965. Three years later, at Auroville's inauguration ceremony on February 28, 1968, young boys and girls representing 121 nations and 23 Indian states placed a handful of soil from their homeland in a lotus-shaped urn, symbolizing the creation of a town dedicated to peace, international understanding and a hopeful future for humanity. This was the beginning.
