Orapa is an open pit mine, discovered in 1967 by a team of geologists and owned by the De Beers Group.
Orapa is an open pit mine, discovered in 1967 by a team of geologists belonging to the De Beers Group and led by Manfred Marx. Operational in July 1971, the mine was officially inaugurated by the former president of Botswana, Sir Seretse Khama. The mine is currently 250 m deep and is expected to reach 450 m by 2026. Each year, 12 million tons of diamond ore are extracted, for a record production of 17 million carats in 2006, which represents 10% of the world's production.
