KALAHAKU OVERLOOK

Beautiful view on the crater. At this level, we can observe the very rare endemic plant,ahinahina, which grows only on the volcanic cones called cinder cones, and which is also found on Mauna Kea and Kilauea, on Big Island. Easily recognized by its silver needles (hence the name silversword ), this plant lives for about twenty years. When it reaches maturity, it produces pretty purple flowers only once, as it dies soon after. Be careful, picking it is tempting but strictly forbidden.
