This small town is located in the parish of Avoyelles and takes its name from a merchant, Marc Eliche, who established a trading post here in 1794. However, Marksville was not indicated on the maps of Louisiana until 1809. During the Civil War, Marksville welcomed Confederate soldiers from Texas. The town came under Union control in 1863 during the Red River Campaign led by Major General Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894). Points of interest in the town include the Tunica-Biloxi Indian Tribe Museum, the Paragon Casino Resort and the 1820 Creole Hypolite Boredelon House.
