Here we explore the history of this place, before the Civil War, through the eyes of two women: Mary Weeks, who took over the sugarcane plantation after her husband's death, and Louisa Bryant, the enslaved housekeeper who managed the day-to-day life at Shadows. Delve into their lives and experiences at Shadows, which was built in 1834 as a family home, not a plantation. More than 17,000 documents, photographs, oral histories, archaeological artifacts and original furnishings shape the visitor experience.
