Mounana, a small town 25 km north of Moanda, is now deserted. It had its heyday around 1958, when the Comuf (Compagnie des mines d'uranium de Franceville) exploited the uranium deposit. The company closed the deposit in 1999, which put an end to the development of Mounana. After its closure, more than half of the former miners complained of lung problems and then organized to denounce the nuclear pollution in their town. Released in 2019, Eric Michel's documentary The Invisible Wounds delivers poignant testimonies from the now-forgotten residents of Mounana.
