This village is the cradle of the Valdivian culture, one of the oldest in the country (from 3500 to 1500 BC). Six thousand years ago, the potters of Valdivia showed an undeniable artistic sense and technique. The site of Real Alto has revealed the remains of the oldest city in South America. There are still ceramic objects to be unearthed, but excavations are prohibited. Near the village, many signs indicate "antiguedades" (antiquities). The ceramics you will find there, cleverly presented as recently discovered rarities, are in fact mass-produced by local artisans
