320 km from Belém, on the seaside. The French were the first Europeans to set foot here when they settled in Maranhão in the early 17th century. Viseu has a beautiful beach. Rough coconut palms surround huts, guarded by pink ibises and herons. One could believe that one reached the end of the world or in any case that one approaches it strongly, so much the displacements in the heat of North of Brazil, seem interminable. It takes a good 4 hours to get there from the coast of Viseu, where the 56,000 inhabitants live mainly from fishing and livestock. You can visit the sea caves at Pedra de Gurupi.
