From a few houses, a fazenda, sugar cane, Pesqueira was not long in developing considerably under the dynamic impulse of its founder José de Sequeira.Today it has 62,800 inhabitants, and its economy is based on livestock, crafts (industrial production of embroidered fabrics) and tourism, mainly Brazilian. The Virgin Mary appeared here in 1936, which attracts pilgrims in droves. Lovers of the great outdoors will also find in the Serra do Gavião forests, paths and waterfalls for beautiful walks. Pesqueira has a very merry carnival, with the inhabitants parading in disguise through the streets.
