San Rafael de Guatuso, north of the Malekus Indian Territory, is a village on the road to Caño Negro. You may pass through it on your way to the Tenorio Volcano and Río Celeste Park from La Fortuna. There is nothing special about San Rafael, but it is a good place to go if you want to visit the Venado caves, which are similar to the ones in Barra Honda. They were partially discovered in 1945 by the French speleologist Robert Vergnes. You can observe a fauna composed of fish, insects, spiders and bats; but also stalactites, stalagmites and waterfalls - some formations are more than 6 million years old
