Koupéla and Pouytenga represent the two urban communes in the province of Kouritenga, in the central-eastern part of Burkina Faso. Koupela, which means "white granite" in mooré, is a small town with a population of nearly 23,000 inhabitants, twinned with the town of Grigny (69). The city is populated by Mossi and Fulani people, who came down from the Sahel in search of pastures. It is only a stopover town at the crossroads between the Togo and Niger roads.
