Pouytenga was founded by Naaba Pouya, the city inherited the name of his founder, from where "Pouy Tenga" means "the land of Pouya" in moored. Known to be a commercial city, it has played an important role in the history of trans-Saharan trade. The Pouytenga market, a few tens of kilometers away, is a major place of exchange, especially for goods from Togo. The traders in Lomé and Ouaga are negotiating on the days of large markets.
