Nizhnyi Novgorod, not to be confused with Novgorod (the Great), is the 5th largest city in Russia in terms of population (1,270,000) and offers an interesting mix of modern and medieval cities. The former Soviet Gorky (named after the famous playwright) is, despite the huge industrial complexes, a very pleasant city, which deserves a 2 or 3-day visit. The banks of the Volga and Oka rivers are easy to walk along, as are the Kremlin and the Old Town. The architectural and cultural heritage of "Nijni" is particularly rich: the whole city has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the differences between the "upper city" and the "lower city" are striking.
