With more than 440,000 inhabitants, Sochi is the most popular Russian seaside resort since the fall of the USSR. Despite its kitschy reputation, the city, built on a hillside and dotted with palm trees, is very pleasant in both summer and winter. The inhabitants are known for their hospitality, good food and frequent use of English. The beautiful season lasts from May to September. July and August are almost unbearable due to overcrowding and exorbitant prices. The current economic crisis does not help: Russians prefer the Russian Riviera for a less expensive holiday without the need for a visa. June is undoubtedly the best time to take advantage of the off-season atmosphere.
