20 km south of Sochi, Adler (70,000 inhabitants, including a large Armenian diaspora) is no longer technically a city, but a district of Sochi, where the airport and Olympic Park are located. Formerly an Abkhaz village, Adler, whose name is not of German but Turkish origin, took off shortly after the Revolution. While Sochi has managed to retain a certain charm, Adler has been disfigured by property developers. There are almost no old traditional houses left. Since the Abkhazian conflict, Adler has lost its importance as a place of transit with Georgia. It remains an important stop for excursions to Krasnaya Poliana.
