70 km from Sochi, the Krasnaya Poliana Valley, where one of the most tragic battles of the Caucasus Wars was fought, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art winter sports resort for the 2014 Olympics. The Gazprom company, of which Dmitry Medvedev was once one of the directors, has bought part of the hills surrounding Krasnaya Poliana to build a huge hotel complex of chalets, and the whole thing is quite charming. Very popular with Muscovites and accessible in one hour by train from the airport, Krasnaya Poliana is the best equipped Russian resort. It is not uncommon for ministers to come here to ski. Compared to Western Europe, the prices are the same or even a little more expensive.
