The last lock of the trip will allow to go down 12 m on the Svir. Built as part of Lenin's electrification plan, it might never have seen the light of day if the Soviets had not been stung by the unfavourable opinion of the American consultants. It is working satisfactorily, but the present structure is not the original dam. It was deliberately destroyed to submerge the approaching German troops, and rebuilt after the war.
