Things to see and do Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin)

In the northeast of the city, there is an old Roman amphitheatre discovered in the 1960s. Far from being as grandiose as the ruins of Caerleon, the "Cavea" (semi-circular terraces distributed by radiant stairs) is still 46 metres long.

The Romans established their presence in Carmarthen in 75 AD. This amphitheatre, the westernmost in the Roman Empire, is also one of the seven still visible in Britain! Objects from various excavations in the area can be found at the Carmarthenshire County Museum in Abergwili.

Lovers of green spaces won't want to miss the National Botanic Garden of Wales, opened in 2000, which tops the list of Britain's most beautiful gardens and is one of Welsh tourism's most popular destinations.

Its themed orchards and 8,000 plants, including rare and even endangered species, as well as those resurrected from gardens of the past, will delight even those without a green thumb!

For more than 800 years, the market has been a friendly and essential part of Carmarthen's local life. There are local products, crafts, second-hand books, spices, antiques, a little of everything... As well as the traditional stalls of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meat and fish... Market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays (also outside). The Farmer's Market is held every first Friday of the month. Stands for eating on site and a coffee: Beth's Cafe, open every day from 8am to 4pm.

This garden offers an incredible diversity of plants and styles, as well as rare and exotic species. To be discovered in spring and summer for a complete experience, you can enjoy a guided tour, a gardening course or floral displays. You can also visit the historic house which, like the gardens, was restored in the 1990s. The garden has undergone many changes since its creation in the ^13th century, and is still steeped in history. A visit that is both historical and contemplative, a moment of relaxation and discovery.

Immerse yourself in the history of Carmarthenshire at this small but comprehensive museum. You'll find many life-size reconstructions of life in the county at different times. Life in the mines, the first telephones, an early ^20th-century classroom - you'll find all these stories and more. For adults and children alike, this free museum is a great place to have a good time. The surrounding park is also well worth a visit, with a charming pond ideal for family walks.
