Petit Futé's opinion on CAERPHILLY CASTLE
Dominating an impressive 12 hectare site, this castle is the largest in the country and the second largest in Great Britain, after Windsor. This is the example of the perfect medieval castle: crenellated towers, drawbridges, dungeons... Built on the remains of a Roman fort and the ruins of a Norman fort, the castle was built in the 13th century by the Anglo-Norman lord Gilbert de Clare for a defensive purpose: to protect itself from Llywelyn the Great. But he managed to destroy a large part of it; the English then rushed to rebuild it.
